When Your Goals Aren’t Working as Planned

Isn’t it funny that you can put in all the work, attention, and focus on something and still have it fall through? I know during the summer months, my goals won’t always look the way I want them to. Odds are, there will be a trip, a party, or a girl’s night that ultimately derails my carefully laid plans. I will stay up too late, abandon my workouts, and eat fast food too many times.

I think we forget that our goals are fluid. Or at least the steps we take to get there are! I readjust my action steps multiple times throughout the year. Yes, you read that right. The master planner has to adjust, too. Sometimes I’ll admit the whole “attainable goal” thing isn’t exactly on my mind when I created my yearly roadmap. And if I’m not careful, I’ll discourage myself and abandon my goals altogether.

When action steps towards our goals don’t work out the way we want them to, it’s okay to stop and change it up. It’s alright to take a minute to breathe and then change courses. The steps don’t make sense if they don’t work for you or with you.

If you need to, take the time today to adjust your goals. Make them realistic and attainable. Set the bar low, before you set the bar high. Building up grit and stamina is part of the work. And if you feel like you can’t see a good, clear next step ask a friend, or ask us!
